Seriously, do people not know how much force airbags open with? Only logical reasoning could be they have Takata airbags and they’re protecting themselves from the potential shrapnel

Nope.

Most people only see airbags in movies, where it just looks like a big balloon they rest on

no they don’t. they think airbags are these big fluffy pillows which emerge from nothingness. I used to work at a test lab, and we did airbag deployment testing complete with the high-speed cameras. It was mesmerizing to watch videos of the seat-integrated airbags just basically blow the side of the seat apart.

and I don’t know why, but it almost always seems to be women who put their feet up on the dash.

Almost 15 years ago in high school our shop teacher showed us how much force they open with by placing a wheel and tire on an airbag in the parking lot and setting it off with a car battery. Launched the wheel about 50 feet in the air.

Road trips are hard work! I think the odds of airbag opening are slim, but who wants to be folded in half by one? The only thing worse — airbags or not — are the stupid coonts who rest a foot on the outside mirror. Even a minor accident and that A pillar is going to split you open.

when i started with my wife, she would do that on the dash of mx SX4. So what it did was stop on the side of the road. when she asked why i stopped. i explained what would happen if we get into an accident.

think she only tried once again, i just said your feet, and never again...

I always think about Mythbusters doing their airbag test where people drive with both hands on the center of the steering wheel. The airbag sheered both thumbs off on their test dummy.

My dad’s friend wrecked his E39 several years ago, mid-turn, while steering hand-over-hand. His wristwatch left an imprint on his forehead. Since then, he's been the biggest advocate of "shuffle steering" that I know.

the seat and side curtain bags do an impressive amount of destruction. watching them deploy on high speed video, you get to see a lot of things you miss just by watching them in person. shit just goes flying everywhere.

I seriously try not to think of it, it’s too sad and irritating. The other day I saw a woman driving a white Acura, right hand with a cell to her ear, left hand plucking her eyebrows, she was looking at the mirror in her visor, and she was driving in the passing lane.

It’s best to just spread awareness to friends and family, but if they want to make poor decisions, there’s nothing you can do to stop them. -_-

WWYR: Takata shrapnel in the face or up the ass while simultaneously being folded in half?

Yes, people don’t realize (or care). They’ll just sue the automaker when they get maimed. You know, maybe it’s because I’m just too tall (6'1), but I don't understand how people can even get their feet up there. I've tried before in a parked vehicle while I was waiting for someone in the passenger seat. I can't physically bend my legs enough to the them on the dash or out the window.

There are dumbasses on youtube that film themselves sitting on an airbag as they deploy it. Need I say more?

Any person with their feet or sneakers on the dashboard of a car deserve it. I spazzed out on my friend because he crossed his left leg over his right in my car and left a foot print on the middle of my door card, made him wipe it off too.

I did this all the time growing up, but no one in our family had a car with passenger airbags until I was 22. Airbag-wise, it’s probably still safe in most of my Dad’s cars. Obviously it was never safe accident-wise. Just another bad habit...in an automatic now, I'll drive with my left arm out the window and I can't seem to stop.

And when we passed a car, or a car passed us on the interstate and the passenger had their feet on the dash, she’d call them out to us. Flash forward 35 years and my daughters kick off their shoes and put toe prints on the inside of the front windshield and I literally want to gag.
